Responsibilities

The Commercial Banking Underwriter leads credit risk function by gathering and analyzing credit information on current and potential borrowers and determining credit risk for diversified types of loans. Attend client prospect meetings, gather information and perform research in order to identify, quantify and mitigate underwriting risk inherent in a commercial lending function.  The individual will be expected to develop strong working relationships with credit teammates, sales teammates, credit officers and other bankers. 

Essential functions and basic duties include but are not limited to:

  • Underwrites and manages a large, complex, and multifaceted commercial loan portfolio consisting of working capital lines of credit, term-Debt, management buyouts, acquisitions, owner-occupied real estate, dealer finance, wealth management loans, and Letter of credit arrangements.
  • Prepare in-depth, front-end analysis of credit request for the purposes of approval. This includes gathering all necessary financial information; discussing credit request and financial information with customer in conjunction with Risk Management, initial preparation of credit approval documents, and shepherding of the credit request through appropriate approval process.
  • Provides an independent, in-depth analysis of financial statements, projections and business plans; identifies and mitigates key risks
  • Analyzes individual company performance, the impact of industry and competitive dynamics and macroeconomic events on the creditworthiness of clients and prospects
  • Determines the appropriate risk rating for a company, proactively identifying risk rating changes
  • Leads discussions with credit approvers
  • Performs additional analysis as required by policy for leveraged loans
  • Assist Commercial Bankers on customer/prospect visits of more complex credits by taking a leading role in the credit dialogue and loan structure negotiations.
  • Ensures compliance with internal bank commercial loan policy, credit risk management policy and external regulatory requirements;  documents any exceptions to policy and related rationale/mitigants
  • Serves in a credit leadership role by actively participating in the training and mentoring of junior teammates to help build a best-in-class credit organization

 Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Advanced user of Excel, PowerPoint, Risk Analyst, and Word

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

This position may be filled at a Senior Commercial Credit Underwriter or an Underwriter III based on the skills and qualifications of the most successful candidate.

 

Underwriter III:

Bachelor’s degree in business related field business with emphasis in management, accounting, finance, or a related field. Candidates must have 5 plus years of previous underwriting or credit analysis experience. 

 

Sr. Underwriter:

Bachelor’s degree in business related field business with emphasis in management, accounting, finance, or a related field. Candidates must have 7 plus years of previous underwriting or credit analysis experience. Formal credit or commercial loan training and some previous credit decisioning preferred.
