BBVA’s New Digital Businesses (NDB) is a global business unit that is disrupting the banking and financial services industry by investing in, partnering with, incubating, and acquiring fintech start-ups. With offices in Madrid, San Francisco, Hong Kong and London, NDB is a key piece of BBVA’s global innovation initiative. Through NDB, BBVA has acquired Simple (US), Holvi (Finland), and Openpay (Mexico). It owns a substantial stake in Atom (UK). It invests in fintechs like Prosper, Personal Capital, and Coinbase through its venture capital arm, Propel Venture Partners. And it is incubating a number of cutting-edge fintech start-ups including a bank-as-a-service platform that will allow developers to access the bank’s core processes via open APIs.

 

BBVA is looking for a Control Lead that will join our Venture Creation team in their San Francisco office to support the growth of our portfolio of early stage technology companies and ensure that their strategy, business, and operations align with their compliance, regulatory, risk management, and legal obligations.

 

What you’ll do:

As a key member of the team, the Control Lead will influence the evolution of these companies from the ideation stage, and will be accountable for delivery of First Line of Defense responsibilities during incubation and early market launch. Accordingly, the Control Lead will liaise with global/ New Digital Business (NDB) and country control functions, ensuring the strong two-way flow of information necessary for effective oversight and governance.

  • Participate as a core member in the ideation work of our Venture Creation team, working with our Entrepreneurs In Residence, designers, product owners and engineers and providing compliance and regulatory input into the design phase of new ventures
  • Advise the CEOs, product and engineering leads on control-related issues as companies are incubated and go through their alpha and beta launch phases.
  • Support the management teams of the ventures in the recruitment of the permanent control team and transition to them between beta and full market launch
  • Ensure that the team fulfills its obligations under applicable law, regulation, and BBVA policy and enterprise risk management framework.
  • Ensure that activities remain within the defined risk tolerances of both BBVA and relevant subsidiaries. This will include, but not be limited to, development and administration of new products and features by assessing risks, identifying necessary controls, and ensuring necessary signoff from key NDB and country control functions.
  • Coordinate closely with BBVA global, NDB, and country control functions, ensuring that they have the information needed for effective governance and oversight.
  • Create processes and policies to ensure risks are managed effectively and efficiently.
  • Support regulatory outreach on issues, working in all cases through regulatory relationships.
  • Acts as the compliance and risk management partner to the CEO in vendor management and negotiations during incubation and alpha and beta launches
  • Develop or revise appropriate policies, procedures, contracts, and agreements to ensure compliance.
  • Ensures that internal policies and procedures are prepared, reviewed, and updated as necessary.

 

Qualifications

What you’ll bring:

Required Qualifications:

  • 7 or more years of banking and regulated financial services experience focused in compliance, risk management and/or audit
  • At least 3 years of experience managing compliance or regulatory issues in complex environments involving cross-departmental coordination.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of regulatory and compliance trends in the US especially BSA/AML, Consumer and Non Consumer compliance, Privacy regulation, and cross-border compliance.
  • Experience evaluating risk and risk management practices specific to Commercial Banking
  • Advanced knowledge of federal and state banking regulations, bank operations and procedures, governance risk & compliance management solutions
  • Working knowledge of technology company tools and/or product development processes
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of the organization
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills (one-to-one basis as well as through group sessions)
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills including the ability to probe sensitive issues while maintaining the highest level of integrity and objectivity.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Proven and progressive financial services operations, internal audit, compliance and/or legal management experience or equivalent.
  • Strong working knowledge and/or background in identification of Risk(s) and Control(s).
  • Strong working knowledge of internal control and risk management concepts, financial services industry practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Broad scope of knowledge of financial services business including products, operations, systems and organization.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills including the ability to probe sensitive issues while maintaining the highest level of integrity and objectivity.
  • The ability to function effectively with limited supervision.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including database and other reporting applications.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks in a fluid environment and work both independently and as a team member.
  • Excellent project management skills, including showing initiative and taking responsibility for projects as well as the ability to lead multiple project at one time
