Overview

Background:
The Corporate Citizenship & Reputation team focuses on supporting business development, achieving outstanding compliance with the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), elevating the brand, increasing customer loyalty and supporting the community by building and managing BBVA Compass’ reputation as an outstanding corporate citizen. Corporate Responsibility and Reputation directs and manages the BBVA Compass Foundation and the Community Giving program, Employee Involvement (Giving and Volunteerism), Financial Education, Diversity & Inclusion, and the Environment and Natural Resources programs. The department produces an annual corporate responsibility report for the bank, manages the national relationship strategy for key community partners and is responsible for managing the company’s reputation.
 
The Role and Responsibilities:
The Corporate Citizenship & Reputation Director will be responsible for managing community giving, employee giving and employee volunteerism programs, ensuring CRA compliance in these programs and increasing their integration with the bank’s Marketing and Communications departments. The director also oversees sustainability reporting and the production of the annual corporate responsibility report, acts as the department’s external affairs leader, manages the company’s response to activists/crisis situations, manages a national community advisory board, manages reputation risk, and spearheads the framework for the bank’s diversity and inclusion efforts for positive community outcomes. This position also serves as a Program Officer for the BBVA Compass Foundation, responsible for managing Community Giving with assigned national and local relationships.

Responsibilities

Major Responsibilities Include:

 

Corporate Citizenship

  • Create partnerships with local and national nonprofit organizations (in education, arts & culture, health & human services, diversity & inclusion, environment & natural resources).
  • Provide monthly & quarterly reporting and leadership around progress towards goals.
  • Guide market leaders in appropriate resource allocation for community commitments necessary to develop an outstanding Corporate Responsibility program.
  • Conduct training to ensure bank personnel understand the community giving program and is able to offer value-added consultation on community involvement throughout the bank footprint.
  • Manage compliance with BBVA Compass Foundation governance and IRS guidelines.
  • Meet BBVA Compass Foundation focus area targets for giving.
  • Serve as the Senior Program Officer for the BBVA Compass Foundation, responsible for managing the operations, online platform and review/approval processes for all grant-making done by the BBVA Compass Foundation, as well as for all sponsorships and non-grant contributions made by BBVA Compass.
  • Successful execution of the employee giving program and the employee volunteer program, including implementing strategies for action through employee volunteer chapters throughout the bank footprint.
  • Manage compliance with BBVA Compass Charity governance and IRS guidelines.
  • Manage relationships with vendors and execute strategies for management of corporate giving, employee volunteerism and employee giving through web platforms and other tools offered by contracted vendors (Cybergrants, Your Cause, etc).

Sustainability Reporting

  • Manage the reporting process with multiple internal providers of data and content for the production of the annual corporate responsibility report.
  • Manage the relationship with Deloitte or other designated auditing firm for the verification of data to adopted GRI standards for the report.
  • Lead the composition process for the narrative content in the report and produce significant portions of the writing directly.
  • Adhere to the standards set out by the BBVA Group for annual corporate responsibility reporting, including following the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) framework.
  • Produce executive level reports on a monthly & quarterly basis with regard to key corporate responsibility indicators, including auditable reports to be used in official publications and for public recognition.

Communication and External Messaging

  • Collaborate with corporate communications to produce key communications content for external distribution, along with leading communication efforts for the department, including as spokesperson.
  • Prepare targeted communications plans and initiatives aimed at improving/maintaining a positive reputation for the bank and generating measurable P.R. outcomes.
  • Guide department staff on preparing story-telling content to internal and external audiences in order to promote the corporate citizenship and CRA successes achieved by the bank.
  • Prepare program narratives and speeches for executives.
  • Support government relations efforts and serve as a bank representative with external organizations representing the bank on public policy issues.

Reputation

  • Under the leadership of the department director, prepare and coordinate initiatives and communications that positively impact the bank’s reputation.
  • Manage the bank’s relationship with a reputation tracking vendor and interpret / distribution reputation tracking reports.
  • Coordinate the department’s role in reputation risk management, including working with the operational risk committees and proposing responses for for addressing reputation incidents.
  • Manage responses to activists and other crisis situations related to the bank’s reputation.
  • Provide internal consultation support to national and local bank leaders with regard to reputational issues, to include both reputation-building actions and reputation risk management.

Stakeholder Management

  • Develop and implement the process to invite and confirm members of a new national community advisory board on an ongoing basis.
  • Manage the community advisory board for successful outcomes including the mitigation of reputation risk with regard to the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA).
  • Coordinate the multiple annual meetings (approximately three) of the community advisory board, including travel arrangements, agenda/speakers and meeting summaries.

National Partnerships & Diversity

  • Manage assigned relationships with strategic community partners at the national level, especially to promote the bank’s corporate citizenship and outreach efforts with diverse communities.
  • Identify and execute new partnerships that promote CRA and corporate citizenship goals, including goals around business development for community development lending, small business lending and mortgage lending in low to moderate income communities and to low to moderate income borrowers.
  • Lead the bank’s efforts on diversity & inclusion in terms of corporate citizenship and influence both the Human Resource and Procurement business units with regards to diversity & inclusion initiatives in order to position the bank among top corporations for diversity.

BBVA Compass Foundation

  • Serve as a Program Officer for the bank foundation, including vetting and proposing for approval requests for contributions from assigned nonprofit organizations.

Other

  • Provide leadership to special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

The Candidate:

The successful candidate will possess the following minimum qualifications:

  • At least 15 years’ experience in corporate communications, external affairs and public relations, with significant experience in public relations and marketing on community issues.
  • At least 10 years’ experience preparing written communications plans, managing communications/PR campaigns and engaging with external vendors for communications/marketing campaigns.
  • 7-10 years leadership experience, managing local and remote team members
  • Experience working in and with community organizations, especially those that serve low to moderate income, minority and other distressed/underserved populations.
  • Must exhibit excellent oral, written and listening skills, and the ability to work and communicate with various partners.
  • Demonstrated experience in meeting deadlines, maintaining difficult schedules, managing multiple projects, and working independently.
  • Proven experience in event planning and management skills, to include creative development, organization of events, marketing and promotion, execution, and delivery of target goals.
  • Ability to travel regionally on a regular basis and work after hours and on weekends when necessary.
  • Ability to champion efforts in creating a diverse workplace.
  • Undergraduate degree required, with majors in Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or Communications preferred.
  • Advanced degree preferred with specialization in Public Relations, Marketing, Public Affairs, Public Administration or Communications.
